Letters: Abortion is about ‘power, control’ and keeping people in their place | Letters

If you’re upset with what appears to be the direction of the United States Supreme Court, you better overcome your political apathy and vote like your life depends on it, because it does.

And it’s not just about babies and the sanctity of life. It’s about power and control.

Not only on women, but on position and economic status. And the root is fear – the fear of losing one’s place. Many members of the Republican Party have been working on this same policy for decades. Fearing the disappearance of white male power, they have curtailed the right to vote, blatantly beating themselves up, and are now on the verge of taking away a woman’s right to choose whether or not to give birth.

We know this decision will disproportionately affect women of color. Forcing these women to have more children than they can afford to care for ensures that they (the women and their offspring) “stay where they belong” – a place of poverty and enslavement, destined to stay in menial, low-paying jobs or even worse, modern for-profit prison slavery.

We have just started the hard work. Don’t let them push us away. You can make noise and “good problems”, but voting is what works best in our democracy.
