Traditionally, companies have used mechanical measures to protect against these types of incidents, but non-contact sensors can now be used as OEM devices (integrated or upgraded to existing equipment) to alert an operator of unsafe conditions, so that measures can be taken to prevent an accident.
An American manufacturer of vertical stock pickers looked for a better solution to limit mast extension when their vehicles were not on level ground. He determined that a mast can only be safely extended to a certain height when his vehicle is on a slope greater than 2-3 degrees.
The elevator manufacturer used mechanical pendulum style tilt switches. This type of sensor is usually preset with limits, is slow to respond and can be prone to false alarms. The measurement of forklift tilt in static conditions is not the same as in dynamic conditions. Additionally, the physics incurred with sudden acceleration or deceleration, combined with rapid turns, can cause a false alarm.
The manufacturer decided to use DIS-Sensors non-contact rocker switches from one of its North American distributors. This stylish sensor is based on a solid-state MEMS accelerometer chip, has a 1.6 x 1.6-inch footprint, and is housed in a rugged waterproof housing. The entire unit is fully encased and sealed against environmental ingress.
A MEMS device, it is subjected to imposed forces after sudden acceleration or deceleration, but the manufacturer chose a DIS toggle switch QG40N because the unit could easily be fine-tuned, including programming parameters to minimize false alarms. The manufacturer can now fine-tune a number of parameters to best suit an application, including alarm limits, pre-alarm limits, zero reference, sensor hysteresis, delays, and the average of the sensor.
Working with their distributor, the manufacturer determined the optimal settings and mounting location based on the stockpicker. He learned that the proper integration of sensors, primarily to improve safety, can improve function and that it doesn’t need to be prohibitive or difficult to design into a product.
